Latest tobacco prices rise takes effect
The third of six consecutive annual increases in a tax on tobacco took effect on 1 January, taking the price of the cheapest brand of 20 cigarettes to about $16 per packet.
But an organisation helping smokers to quit says it still wants steeper tobacco price rises.
Quit Group chief executive Paula Snowden said price rises help motivate people who may be worried about their health or the example they are setting their children, to take action, according to Radio New Zealand.
She said the sector would like to see even heftier price increases over the next three years.
Quit Group intends to roster twice the number of personnel for the next two weeks to cope with an anticipated spike in callers seeking help.
